24 Hours of Le Mans and the world championship (3): LM GTE Pro update

The double points of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) profoundly changed the hierarchy of this 2015 season.

Corvette won in LM GTE Pro a victory as deserved as it was indisputable (Corvette Racing had to withdraw its other car following an accident at the free practice). But since the lovely American is not entered in the full World Championship, it was Ferrari that racked up in the provisional standings in this class. The two AF Corse driver line-ups scored the points for the first two spots (Beretta-Rigon-Calado and Bruni-Vilander-Fisichella). Ferrari launched itself in the FIA GT Constructors World Endurance Cup with 144 points, against 99 for Porsche and 84 for Aston Martin! Just what one needs to take on the second half of the season with ease...On the other hand, nothing is a given yet in the team standings: only 21 points separate AF Corse, Porsche Team Manthey and Aston Martin Racing.

In the overall standings in the GT Drivers World Endurance Cup, Ferrari looks to have cleaned house by placing three of its driver line-ups in the lead, with Bruni-Vilander (61 points), Rigon-Calado (57 points) and Basov-Bertolini-Shaytar (52 points). This last trio owes its admirable position to its win at Le Mans in LM GTE Am. The first Porsche driver, Richard Lietz, has 48 points, ahead of two Aston Martin driver line-ups (McDowall-Rees-Stanaway and Nygaard-Sorensen). For Ferrari and its AF Corse team, the 24 Hours of Le Mans have always been - since the inception of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2012 - the opportunity to earn the most points relative to driver, constructor and team titles which have never been out of its reach. Will the same be said in 2015? The answer on November 21st under the checkered flag at the closing round, the 6 Hours of Bahrain.

The fourth round of the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 6 Hours of Nürburgring, will take place August 30th.
