In the Porsche LM P1 factory team, there are two drivers from countries who dominate in rugby, New Zealander Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber. And the latter is closely linked to a rugby icon in Australia. Born in Queanbeyan, Webber's hometown, and considered one of the greatest rugby players in the country's history (Rugby World Cup winner in 1991, and selected 101 times for the national team), David Campese offered financial support to Webber when he was starting out.
Mark Webber: "My dad knew David Campese when he was young. David gave me financial sponsorship and support when I was racing in Formula 3. I owe him a great deal for that because without him, my career as a driver would not have been the same. We still keep in contact, we are going to get together in London during the next Rugby World Cup. David is a wonderful guy and an extraordinary player. I have not yet looked at the Rugby World Cup schedule but I am going to try and watch the Australian games. I also have a few French friends who will come to the U.K. to watch the XV of France and Australia games. In terms of having Brandon as a New Zealander teammate, I am going to have you add to my contract a clause so it never happens again (laughs)...but we get along very well. The Kiwis are very good athletically. There are not a lot of inhabitants in New Zealand, but when you watch cricket and rugby, they are very good. In Australia, rugby is particularly huge in the media, especially with the Rugby World Cup coming up. But if I win at Le Mans, it's certain there will be more motorsports coverage (laughs)."
