24 Hours of Le Mans 1970-2015 - 45 Porsche stories (20)

Among the race numbers of the 16 Porsche victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - won between 1970 and 1998 - the 20, the 22, the 23 and the 26 carry special meaning.

These race numbers are listed below in Porsche's chronological order at Le Mans:

1970: No. 23 Porsche 917 K (Richard Attwood-Hans Herrmann) - For all time, the 23 will remain for Porsche the first "winning number." The one that got the first victory after 19 years at Le Mans. Twenty-three was also the chassis number for this 917, which was one of the 25 chassis built to obtain the approval of the CSI (Commission Sportive Internationale, predecessor to the current Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile).

1971: No. 22 Porsche 917 K (Helmut Marko-Gijs van Lennep) - Porsche sealed the deal with a second consecutive win, this time on a dry track after the previous year's rain and difficult conditions. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep seized the opportunity and established a distance record.(5 335 kilometers raced at an average of 222 km/h) that would not be beaten until 2010.

1976: No. 20 Porsche 936 (Jacky Ickx-Gijs van Lennep) - First participation and first win for the 936, which also made history as the first prototype with a turbocharged engine at Le Mans. Like Hans Herrmann in 1970, Gijs van Lennep retired. His teammate Jacky Ickx, who won for the third time, went on to win two more times with the 936 in 1977 and 1981.

1998: No. 26 Porsche 911 GT1 (Allan McNish-Laurent Aiello-Stéphane Ortelli) - Another noteworthy victory: that of the 911, the road version created in 1963 definitively solidified Porsche's image in the collective imagination and in motorsports. So it was normal the sportster icon would one day win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche's favourite playground...
