Scenes from the 32nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans seem inconceivable in contemporary times where, thankfully, safety measures for drivers and marshalls alike have become top priority.

With the absence of a pit wall separating the track from the pitlane, drivers run toward their cars to start up as quickly as possible without taking the time to buckle their seat belts. Fans hanging over the circuit to take photographs of their favourite drivers. That was what racing was like in 1964, the year the Ferrari 275P driven by Jean Guichet and Nino Vaccarella won the race. Over the course of 50 years, the face of the Sarthe circuit has certainly changed.. .
