5/24 - Sunday, 5th December - The Mansell Family
Once confiding that he always needed to be surrounded by his family, he pushed this idea to the extreme. Accompanied by his two sons, Nigel Mansell competed this year iin his first 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Last winter, the former F1 in 1992 caused a sensation by creating its own team to make an assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans with sons Leo and Greg. Emblazoned with the legendary number "5" painted in the colours of the Union Jack, the Ginetta Zytek was first entered in the Le Mans Series. Fourteenth at the 8 Hours of Le Castellet, the team were apprehensive of Le Mans.
At scrutineering, Nigel was welcomed as a hero by the French public who have not forgotten who was once the shining star for Renault engines in Grand Prix. He could not hide his excitement: "When I think about this race, the Jaguar years come to mind, and the victories of Allan McNish. To see the race through television is one thing, but to live on-site is purely awesome! "
But on that Saturday, the beautiful story ended prematurely after only 17 minutes of racing. As in Adelaide in 1986, a puncture denied Nigel Mansell his goal. "This is a fantastic event but I found it too short this year... I want to come back" he confided, a few weeks later.
