Mechanic for Panis Racing's #65 ORECA 07-Gibson, Christophe: "A mounted tyre weighs about 23 kg." The weight of the pneumatic gun is comparable to that of a large drill (3-4 kg). "The best times are around the 10-second mark, and we've already clocked less during training. The challenge is you're only allowed one attempt, so you can't mess it up." Absolute precision and coordination are key. "We've put in place choreography to go as fast as possible. The direction of the nuts, for tightening and loosening, changes according to the side of the car you're on and you have to keep it that way." Sadly, the Panis Racing team failed to repeat their training performance, with the clock showing a merciless 12:115.
The #94 Peugeot experienced a major misfire at the left rear as the #93 beat out the #7 Toyota looking as if it would win. The #5 Ferrari's mechanics rounded out the top 3 just 0.003 seconds behind Toyota and 0.209 seconds behind Peugeot.
