For the first time in the race's history, the 68 competitors took a rolling start, which was good news for Steve McQueen, who would not have been able to run to his car in a Le Mans type start. Despite his handicap, the actor/driver finished second in the race with Peter Reveson in a Solar Production Porsche 908, with the outright victory going to the factory Ferrari of Nino Vacarella, Ignazio Giunti and Mario Andretti, starting from pole.
